He went out suffering from a very high fever (it had gone to his head), which may make him appear lost, exhausted, or unable to determine his location accurately. He is of sound mind. Because of the condition of his leg and his left hand, he may be near the area where he disappeared or may have been taken to the nearest treatment point.
